SLF: Statement on release of CUD leaders (23rd July 2007).

The imprisonment of CUD leaders some eighteen months ago by TPLF regime in Ethiopia shows TPLF’s determination to resist and reject political change through ballot box. This has been reflecting that the regime will never tolerate effective opposition, with mass base.

The release of CUD leaders on 20th of July 2007 marks one step forward in Ethiopian politics. However in order to pave our way to democracy, peace and stability in the country and in the greater horn of Africa, The TPLF regime in Ethiopia is still left with many things to do among which few includes, Freeing all political prisoners, stop committing mass murder and punishing Ogadenses with famine by blocking emergency relief and movement of goods and people in Ogadenia, Oromia, Sidama and other parts of the country and must have political will and commitment to create a forum of dialogue through which hidden potentials of all parties struggling for freedom and democracy in and outside the country would be revealed in Ethiopia’s democratization and peace building processes.

SLF takes this opportunity to share its joy and relief with CUD leaders and their family, CUD members and other alliance partner organizations those who initiated the formation of Alliance for Freedom and Democracy.
