The Sidama People's History and Culture.

Sidama is one of the ancient nations in Northeast Africa whose people are one of the major Cushtic groups. The Sidama people had lived under indigenous democratic socio-economic and political structures before Abyssinian colonialists conquered the nation in 1893. Prior to the conquest, the nation had been administered on the basis of equality and consensus, and the people had lived in peace and harmony with the neighbouring nations.

Sidamas had had a remarkable social and political mechanisms such as Woma, Mote and Luwa leadership systems. The economy was based on agriculture, land being the most important property. Each member of the society was allowed to own certain acreage of land enough to support his family. The land holding system had been crafted in a way to maintain fraternity and peace in the Sidama society. But most of these were adversely affected by the said conquest.
